Questions to Office of Environmental Health and the DEP

Here are some questions we intend to ask of representatives from governmental/health agencies that may attend our coming meeting (2:30pm this Monday the 25th of October at the Senior Citizen Center in Union).  Please add any additional questions by posting a comment below.  Thanks!

  • Many of us in Monroe County are concerned that the proposed drilling can potentially destroy the water table and our way of life. You are the people, charged by the society we are in, to safeguard our water. We need to know how you are planning to use your authority to ensure that this potential disaster does not come to pass.
  • What plans have you considered for safeguarding the public from the misted byproducts of recovered produced frack “water”?
  • How have you planned for produced/”industrial” water pit containment and RESTORATION?
  • What provisions for baseline batch testing of local wells can be arranged?
  • Are you aware of the spring, creek, cave and sinkhole abundance in the SPRINGFIELD district involving Greenville and Wayside, where the projected test well drilling site is?
  • We are interested in preserving our pristine water table. What measures  do you propose to guarantee continuing protection of our water table?  For example, if citizens involved in stream monitoring who have initiated projects in their own respective water sheds make an inventory of “pristine areas in need of continuing protection: (as stipulated on page 1 of the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Manual issued by the DEP), can these pristine “hotspots” be declared off limits to industry?  What do you think of the idea of drawing up a map of Monroe County which would flag these areas and distributing it to any industry or enterprise that obtains a permit in this county? OR, even better, making signing an agreement not to disturb these areas a prerequisite to obtaining a permit in this county? Otherwise, what solutions do you have for ensuring “continuing protection” to these areas?
  • Can you give us a working definition of “non-point source pollution”?
  • Do you support the reinstatement of the Clean Water Act and the elimination of the Halliburton Loophole?
  • Who in your opinion needs to be influenced in order to create a change in policy?  Where does the authority live?  Who can make a moratorium happen?
  • Have your departments yet made a public denaouncement/warning/service announcment about the hydraulic fracturing enterprise?
  • In your opinion, based on the nature of the process (millions of gallons of creeping, cracking, seeping poisonous milkshake fired at high pressure into the ground, the majority of which never returns to the surface) and the nature of…well…NATURE (underground water, fissures, cracks, sinkholes, caves; dye tests demonstrating water traveling for miles and miles) – could this endeavor every be carried out in a manner that would insure the protection of the land and the water?
  • Is it on anyone’s agenda (within your agencies) “to improve and protect the water quality of the rivers and streams of West Virginia?” (Taken from the WV save Our Streams Program).  To allow hydraulic fracturing to take place means this goal is not a priority.
  • Ultimately – in which ways are each of you in your various job roles/agencies/etc working to protect our health, our land, our water, etc?
  • What do you recommend our course of action be?  How can we as citizens protect ourselves, our land, and our waters from this fiscally-motivated, largely as-of-yet unregulated and particularly poisonous development project?
